WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND:
- An estimated five million Americans, including one in ten aged 65 and older and nearly half aged
85 and older, have Alzheimer's disease. The incidence is expected to triple by mid-century, especially
with aging baby boomers.
- The Alzheimer's Foundation of America holds National Memory Screening Day each November during
National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month. Hundreds of sites across the country are offering memory
screenings on November 14. Sites can be found at www.nationalmemoryscreening.org.
- Memory screenings are simple: they average ten minutes and consist of questions and tasks to assess memory.
They do not diagnose any illness, but can indicate whether someone should follow up with a full medical exam,
which could lead to proper detection of a memory disorder.
- Proper diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or a related illness is essential to managing and treating the disease
and planning for the future.
- A recent AFA survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, revealed that concern about stigma and denial of
symptoms can delay a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease by more than two years (28.7 months) on average after
symptoms appear.
- Lifestyle changes, such as proper diet, stress management, and physical and mental exercise, can help people
age successfully.
